Custom Candle Manufacturing Glossary
This glossary defines the terms used in custom and private-label candle manufacturing — from minimum order quantities and wax types to branding methods and production timelines. It’s written for brands, retailers, and businesses sourcing custom candles, so you can speak your manufacturer’s language and make informed decisions. Spark Candles is a women-owned custom and private-label candle manufacturer producing in the USA and Canada; the definitions below reflect how custom candle programs actually work in practice.
Private Label Candles
Private label candles are candles manufactured by one company and sold under another brand’s name, with a product developed specifically for that brand. Unlike an off-the-shelf candle, a private-label program lets the brand specify the vessel, wax, fragrance, label, and packaging so the finished candle is largely or entirely unique to them. Private label is the standard route for retailers, hospitality groups, and established brands building an exclusive candle line. See our private label candle manufacturing options.
White Label Candles
White label candles are existing, standardized candles that a manufacturer sells to multiple brands, each adding its own label. The underlying product — vessel, wax, and fragrance — is not unique to any one buyer; only the branding changes. White label is faster and lower-cost than private label, making it well suited to corporate gifts, boutique test launches, and promotional runs. The practical difference: white label is their candle with your brand, while private label is your candle made by them. Our guide on private label vs. white label candles explains the distinction in depth.
Custom Candles
Custom candles are candles built to a brand’s specifications rather than chosen from a fixed catalog. Customization can span the vessel, color, wax, fragrance, label, and packaging, and ranges from simply adding a logo to an existing vessel all the way to a fully bespoke product developed from scratch. The more elements you customize, the higher the typical minimum order. Explore custom candle manufacturing to see the range.
Contract Manufacturing
Contract manufacturing is when a brand outsources the production of its candles to a specialized manufacturer instead of pouring them in-house. The manufacturer handles sourcing, formulation, pouring, quality control, and often packaging and fulfillment, while the brand focuses on selling. It’s the model behind most private-label and custom candle programs, and it lets brands offer candles without owning wax-blending and filling equipment.
MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)
MOQ is the minimum number of units a manufacturer requires per order, usually stated per fragrance or per design. In candle manufacturing, MOQ scales with how customized the product is: simple custom-label orders can start around 25 units, logo imprinted directly on the vessel typically starts near 100, custom-color glass around 250, and specially sourced vessels or custom packaging often 500 or more. Larger retail programs commonly run 1,000–5,000+ units per SKU for better per-unit pricing. See low-MOQ custom candles from 25 units.
Soy Wax
Soy wax is a natural, biodegradable wax made from hydrogenated soybean oil, widely used for premium candles because it burns cleaner and longer than paraffin. It holds fragrance well, has a lower melting point that produces an even burn, and is free of the petroleum byproducts found in paraffin. Soy is the standard choice for brands wanting a clean, natural-positioned candle.
Soy-Coconut Wax
Soy-coconut wax is a blend of soy wax and coconut wax prized for its smooth appearance, excellent fragrance throw, and clean, even burn. Coconut wax carries scent especially well and gives the candle a creamy, luxurious surface, while the soy component adds structure and sustainability. It’s a common choice for premium and luxury candle lines. All Spark candles use natural soy and soy-coconut wax, free of paraffin, phthalates, and parabens.
Fragrance Load
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to the total wax weight in a candle. A higher fragrance load generally produces a stronger scent, but each wax has a maximum load it can hold before performance suffers, so quality manufacturers balance load against clean burning and safety. Typical candle fragrance loads fall between roughly 6% and 12% depending on the wax and fragrance.
Cold Throw and Hot Throw
Cold throw is how a candle smells when unlit; hot throw is how it smells while burning and dispersing scent into a room. A candle can have a pleasant cold throw but a weak hot throw (or vice versa), so both are tested during formulation. Strong hot throw — the scent actually filling a space — is what most buyers care about most in a finished candle.
Logo Imprint vs. Custom Label
A logo imprint is branding applied directly onto the candle vessel (for example, printed or etched on the glass), while a custom label is a printed adhesive label applied to the vessel. Imprints give a clean, integrated, premium look and typically start around a 100-unit minimum; full-color labels allow richer artwork, scent names, and messaging and can start as low as 25 units. The right choice depends on your branding, budget, and order size. Browse custom candles with your logo.
Custom Fragrance Development
Custom fragrance development is the creation of a proprietary scent unique to a brand, rather than selecting from a manufacturer’s existing fragrance library. A perfumer or fragrance house blends the scent to a brief, and the resulting fragrance can become part of the brand’s identity across products. Because it requires formulation and testing, custom fragrance carries additional cost and a higher minimum than choosing a stock scent. Learn about custom fragrance development.
Signature Scent
A signature scent is a single fragrance a brand uses consistently across its candle program so customers come to associate that scent with the brand. Using one signature scent also simplifies production and keeps large gifting or retail programs cohesive. It can be selected from a manufacturer’s library or developed as a custom fragrance. Spark offers 50+ signature fragrances.
Vessel
A vessel is the container that holds the candle — typically glass jars, tins, or ceramic. Vessel choice shapes the candle’s look, price, and perceived quality: glass jars read premium for retail and client gifts, while tins are durable and portable for events and mailers. Custom-color or specially sourced vessels increase both cost and minimum order quantity.
Wick
The wick is the cord that draws melted wax up to fuel the flame, and choosing the right wick is critical to how well a candle burns. Wick type and size are matched to the vessel diameter, wax, and fragrance to achieve a clean, even melt pool without tunneling, sooting, or an oversized flame. Common types include cotton and wooden wicks, the latter producing a soft crackle.
Cure Time
Cure time is the period after pouring during which a candle’s wax and fragrance bind and stabilize before the candle performs at its best. Depending on the wax, cure time can range from a few days to two weeks, and skipping it can weaken scent throw. Quality manufacturers build cure time into their production schedule, which is one reason custom candles are made to order rather than rushed.
Corporate Gifting Candles
Corporate gifting candles are branded custom candles given by businesses to clients, employees, or partners for occasions like holidays, appreciation, onboarding, and events. They work well as gifts because a candle is used and displayed rather than discarded, keeping the brand present in the recipient’s home or office. Programs are typically branded with a logo and a broadly appealing scent. See custom corporate candles.
Closing Gift Candles
Closing gift candles are branded candles that realtors, brokerages, and property developers give to clients at the close of a home purchase. Developers gifting an entire community order in volume, with a consistent branded candle in each welcome package. Because a candle gets used in the new home, it offers a lasting, understated brand presence. See real estate closing gifts.
Wholesale Candles
Wholesale candles are candles bought in bulk at trade pricing for resale, either unbranded (blank, for the buyer to label themselves) or already branded. Wholesale typically offers lower minimums and pricing than fully custom private-label programs, making it a cost-effective route for retailers testing a candle line. See wholesale candles.
Lead Time
Lead time is the total time from order approval to finished, shipped product. For custom candles it usually includes artwork proofing, pouring, cure time, and shipping; standard production commonly runs about three weeks from artwork approval, with custom packaging or specialty vessels taking longer. Planning lead time is essential for seasonal or deadline-driven orders such as holiday gifting.
Proof / Mockup
A proof or mockup is a digital preview of how a brand’s artwork will look on the finished candle, reviewed and approved before production begins. It lets the client catch issues with logo placement, colors, or label text early, so the poured product matches expectations. Production lead time is usually counted from the date artwork is approved, not from when the order is placed.
WBE Certification
WBE (Women’s Business Enterprise) certification verifies that a business is majority-owned, operated, and controlled by women. For corporate buyers, sourcing from certified WBE suppliers can support supplier-diversity goals and procurement requirements. Spark Candles is a women-owned, WBE-certified manufacturer.
Clean-Burning Candle
A clean-burning candle is one made and wicked to minimize soot and avoid harmful additives, typically using natural wax (such as soy or soy-coconut) and fragrances free of phthalates, parabens, and paraffin. Clean burning depends on both the materials and correct wick sizing for an even melt. It matters most for candles used in homes and offices, including client and employee gifts.
